Description: This charming, loosely handled portrait features a somewhat forlorn woman wearing an oversize hat and fur stole. It is initialed upper right: “GdE”, a typical signature for French painter Georges d’Espagnat.

Georges D’Espagnat (1870-1950), painter, illustrator, and set designer, was friends with Renoir, Signac, Bonnard, and Vuillard, and was influential in the art circles of his time — notably with Matisse, Gauguin, Pissaro, etc. He was elected Vice President of the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1935 and taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. His works are in the collections of many major art institutions, including: the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
Condition: Some chipping along the left edge, laid onto a larger pasteboard support. Otherwise good condition.
