Description: This is a charming little painting of a coastal scene, done in oil on artist’s board. Small waves, painted with an impasto technique, are crashing onto rocks in the foreground, with a small ship sailing by. An indistinct shoreline village and some rolling hills can be seen in the background.
Signed H. G. Maratta in red on the lower right. In a textured, gilded frame to 13" x 10 3/4". The sight measures 7 1/2" x 5 1/2". Item #FA00072
Chicago artist Hardesty Maratta (1864-1924) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and exhibited there from 1888-1906. In addition to his more traditional paintings, he is well known for his work with the Teco Art Pottery company and for his theories regarding the harmony of colors — "The Maratta Scales of Artists’ Oil Pigments."
Condition: Recently cleaned by a professional; one very small spot of inpainting in the sky and a tiny chip to one of the waves, both at the right edge. Generally in very good condition.
