Description: We offer an original watercolor painting by Mary E. Riley after William Guy Wall. The image is 16 ¾” x 22 ¼”, on ivory wove paper (18 ¾” x 24 ½”), pencil signed on verso “E. Hill Mary E. Riley,” and inscribed under the image “A View Near the Landing at [?].” A bucolic country scene with a meandering path and a craggy tree growing along a creek, with a small cottage perched on rolling hills in the distance. Item #FA00153.
William Guy Wall was known for his Hudson River Portfolio (New York, 1821-1825), from which Mary E. Riley has expertly rendered “A View Near Jessup’s Landing”. Perhaps Ms. Riley was responding to the growing Hudson River School movement. This watercolor is a spirited take on the subject; it looks lit from behind, and quite ambitious in size for the time period (likely mid-19th century).
Condition: The paper is puckered and there is some minor paint loss in the road near the riverbank and in the sky at the top margin, but the piece is in good, presentable condition overall.
