Description: The “father of South African jazz”, Hugh Masekela (1939-2018) boldly dashed his looping signature beneath his message of “Peace” on this black and white halftone photomontage. The left headshot shows a grinning Masekela in a fedora, the right full length portrait shows the cheerful musician casually leaning against a tree dressed in an oversized suit and holding a flugelhorn. Masekela signed with a sharpie the left image.

Hugh Masekela played the trumpet, the flugelhorn, the cornet, and was an accomplished singer and composer. He was known for his jazz compositions and his anti-apartheid songs, and even had a number-one hit in America in 1968 with his cover of “Grazing in the Grass”.
