Description
Description: An exceptional group of nine autograph letters signed, all written in 1911, all addressed to art dealers in Albany, NY (Annesley and Co.), and all with detailed art related content. Also included is a catalogue for a one-man show of his oil and watercolors at the Annesley Gallery in 1911. Content includes painting titles and prices that Gruppe feels are "net prices". He does, in two letters, say he needs money for his summer trip to Holland and is willing to entertain "good-sized offers". Several letters relate to shipping paintings from various sources to ready the gallery for his exhibition. Item #A00128
Gruppe, born in Canada in 1860, was a landscape and marine painter of considerable renown. Much of his earlier work was of scenes in Holland. Later in life, he and his son, Emile (also a painter) settled on Cape Ann, and he continued to share a Rockport studio with him until 1929.
Condition: Some of the letters are lightly toned, one has a small separation at the bottom of both pages, and four of the pieces have a tiny hole in the blank upper left margin, likely from a thumbtack. The letters are in very good condition overall.
