Description

Description: This serigraph is entirely painted over with the central images highlighted in boldly colored impasto strokes. Max has also signed with slashes of paint at the lower margin.

Peter Max was born (1937) in Belgium, the son of Sala and Jacob. The family fled Germany in 1938, first settling in Shanghai, then Haifa, Israel and finally Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. In 1956 Max studied at the Arts Students League and by the early 1960’s had set up a studio with his friend Tom Daly. The Daly Max studio became well known for their commercial output, particularly in book and advertising illustration. Indeed, Max’s maximalist, psychedelic style would remain a major influence on American design for at least the next two decades. Since the 1980s Max has created portraits of multiple presidents, two large murals at the border crossings into the US from Mexico and Canada, and shown his work in countless museum and gallery exhibitions. He lives in Manhattan.
