Description: This splendid original watercolor of a larger than life trout is signed at the lower right: “W. B. Gillette”.

William [Willard] B. Gillette was born in Scotia, New York in 1864. He lived in Watervliet and Averill Park, New York. He was a painter and etcher by profession with a specialty in marine life. Gillette was the much beloved illustrator for the New York State Fish and Game Reports. His admirers and patrons included the philanthropist Herber Bishop, the Wanamakers, Marshall Fields, and several US senators. He died in Troy in 1937. His work has been featured at the Vermont Shelburne Museum.
