Description: This wonderful soft-ground etching features a larger-than-life cat seated under what appears to be a diagram of the solar system. It is signed lower right in graphite: “Johnny Friedlaender” and is marked “Epreuve d’artiste” (artist proof) at the lower left. The platemark measures 17 1/4″ x 13 3/4″ and is printed on a 22″ x 17 1/4″ sheet of heavy wove paper.  In a four-ply mat to 24″ x 20″.

Gotthard Joachim (Johnny) Friedlaender (1912-1992), German born, studied with Otto Muller. He later moved to France and gained citizenship. In 1978 the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris held a retrospective of his work, as did the Bremen Art Museum in 1987.

Condition: Lightly toned at mat window, blank margins have a few spots of foxing, crease lower right blank margin. Generally good condition with all faults hidden by the mat.
