Description: German historian Heinrich von Treitschke (1834-1896) penned and signed this kind letter to an unnamed woman, passing along the thanks of his sister, Josephe, for the gift she received for her recent wedding. He writes, in German, “You will, I hope, not hold it against her that the thank-you is coming so late. In the first few weeks after the wedding a person surely is entitled to some forbearance, and Josephe has her hands full getting used to a new household.”
Heinrich von Treitschke was a political writer and historian as well as a National Liberal member of the Reichstag under the German Empire. He was an outspoken nationalist who endorsed the Social Darwinian theories of brutal competition among races.
