Description: This jaunty self-portrait oil on canvas is signed lower right: “Philipp”. The verso states: “Robert Philipp 1932 Himself”.
Robert Philipp (1895-1981) studied art at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. His teachers included George Bridgeman, Frank Du Mond, Douglas Volk and George Maynard. He went on to teach at both of those institutions later in life. During the Depression he worked for the Public Works of Art Project. His works are in many prestigious institutional collections including: Corcoran Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum.
Stretcher: 18″ x 15″, framed in wonderful period frame to: 26″ x 23″. Item #FA00451
Condition: A tiny spot of paint loss at the first “P” of his signature, otherwise very good condition.
