Description: This finely bound book, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, is signed by author Thomas Hardy. It is the first volume in a twenty volume author-approved “Autograph Edition” put out by Harper and Brothers in 1915. The book comes from set number 21 of an edition of 153.
Bound in 3/4 blue leather with marbled paper over boards, gilt-stamping along spine, five raised bands, top edge of text block gilded, other edges deckled, marble end papers, 508 pages, illustrated with four photogravures of English manor houses and a map of the Wessex of the novels and poems. 9 1/2″ x 6 5/8″. Thomas Hardy is known for writing novels with characters who often struggled with their passions and social circumstances. Some of his best known works include: Far from the Madding Crowd (1886), and Tess of the d’Urbervilles (1891).
Condition: Volume I only. Corners and spine ends worn, light staining to leather, some scratching to gilding on text block. Generally very good condition with a clean interior and a bold signature.
