Description: A northeast view of the Old State Capitol in Albany, NY graces the cover of this 1844 sheet music for Gov. Wright’s Grand March by Oliver J. Shaw. The sheet music is published by Wm. H. Oakes of Boston. The lithograph is by Thayer & Co. Boston.
The music is dedicated to Silas Wright (1795-1847) who served as the 14th Governor of New York (1845-1846). Wright became a member of the Albany Regency, the coterie of friends and supporters of Martin Van Buren who led New York’s Democratic Party beginning in the 1820s. As his career progressed, he served in the United States House of Representatives (1827-1829), as State Comptroller (1829-1833), and U.S. Senator (1833-1844).
The Old State Capitol was in use from 1812 to 1879 and was demolished in 1883. It was designed by Albany architect Philip Hooker (1766-1836) who is known for designing Hyde Hall, Hamilton College Chapel, The Albany Academy, and Albany City Hall.
