Description: This group of seven unmounted albumen photos depicts scenes from the 1887 St. Paul, Minnesota Winter Carnival. There are pictures of the ice palace both at night and during the day, groups of people posing on sleds or a large ship-like sleigh, two images of a parade, and one St. Paul nighttime street scene with twinkling lights glowing overhead.
Photos are in a variety of sizes, all around 6″ x 8″. Item #P00231
The St Paul Winter Carnival first began in 1886 and was, in part, a response to the spurious claim that Minnesota was akin to Siberia in habitability. The Carnival held parades, outdoor activities, and decorated the grounds with ice sculptures, all in an effort to celebrate the flourishing city. Carnivals were held in 1886-1888, 1896, 1916-1917, 1937-1942, and every year since 1946 (Minnesota Historical Society Library).
Condition: Some photos have short edge tears and some minor wrinkling. Generally very good condition.
