Description

Description: 1940 Presidential hopeful Wendell Willkie (1892-1944) boldly signed this informal waist-up snapshot of himself smiling outside on a sunny day. The cheerful, slightly unfocused image captures Willkie walking outside, perhaps to one of the cars on the right side of photograph. He squints and smiles in the sun, his suit jacket casually unbuttoned.

Willkie was a lawyer and businessman and ran for President on the Republican ticket in 1940. He ultimately lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt.
