Description: We offer a stunning low bowl by Frances Simches. It is 6 3/4″ wide and 1 1/5″ high with a pleasing matte grey blue glaze and signed in graphite on the bottom. Item #DA00184.

Frances Simches (1920-1975) was born in Jackson, Michigan. She apprenticed with potters in New York City while studying at New York University. She taught extensively at NYU, Greenwich House Potters and later Russell Sage College after moving to Albany. For her own work she collected Hudson River clay from around brick factories. Her functional work was sold by George Jensen, Rabun Studios and the International Design Group. Her final teaching position was at the University at Albany as an Assistant Professor of Art. She was recognized for her pioneering work in ceramics and her pieces are in public and private collections, including the University at Albany and the Tang Museum.

Condition: There is an unobtrusive lentil sized chip in the lip of the bowl, otherwise the piece is in good condition.
