Description: This impressionist oil on canvas appears to be set in the Carmel Valley with a vanishing road flanked by several houses dwarfed by the rising slope of the surrounding hills. It is signed lower right: “E. M. Heath” and titled on verso: “The Valley Road”.

Edda Maxwell Heath (1874-1972), American artist, studied at the New York School of Art, Pratt Institute, Adelphi College, and privately with William M. Chase, Arthur Dove, Robert Henri, and Frank DuMond. While in New York, Heath painted political portraits of Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt. In 1928, she moved to Carmel, California, where she became active in the local art scene.
