Description: This autograph letter signed accompanied a portrait sent to O. P. Heggie:
“Here’s the portrait! The best of luck to you.
If you’d like some kind of frame other than this I can use this one.
The cost of the frame and glass was twelve bones Faithfully yours/Chase.”
Written on 8½” x 5 ½” letterhead imprinted: “Joseph Cummings Chase Studio: Hotel Chelsea, 222 West 23rd Street, New York City”. Item #A01978
Joseph Cummings Chase (1878-1965) was an American portrait artist. In addition to WWI and WWII heroes, he painted leading figures in the arts and theater. He lived and painted at the Chelsea Hotel in the 1920s.
Oliver Peters Heggie (1877-1936), an Australian theater and film actor, began in amateur theater productions in Sydney and London. He gained prominence on Broadway (NYC), playing the lead in Androcles and The Lion, Old Man Minick in Minick, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Diggory in She Stoops to Conquer and others. He moved to Hollywood in 1928 and appeared in 27 films, including: The Count of Monte Cristo, The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, etc.
