Description: A splendid combination of an original signed watercolor and a drypoint etching of the same scene. Both feature gnarled, weather-sculpted trees against a mountainous backdrop.

The watercolor is on heavy textured artist’s paper and is signed lower right: “Alfred Hutty”. Sight size: 15″ x 21″ on an 18″ x 25″ sheet of paper. There is a note on the verso titling this “Windswept” and dating it “1950”. This date would make it after the etching, which was the presentation print of the Prairie Printmakers in 1939, which was titled “Loblolly Pines” (signed in graphite lower right). The etching’s platemark measures: 6 5/8″ x 8 3/8″ on a 10 1/4″ x 11 3/4″ sheet. Item #FA00495

Alfred Heber Hutty (1877-1954), painter and printmaker, studied with L. Birge Harrison, George Bridgman and Frank DuMond. He split his time between Woodstock, New York and Charleston, South Carolina and is considered one of the leading figures of the Charleston Renaissance. His works are held in the collections of many major art institutions, including: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, etc.

Condition: Watercolor is taped to the mat, on the verso, around the perimeter (paper tape & masking tape) otherwise very good. The etching is lightly toned, hinging tape at upper blank margin, otherwise very good, a strong impression.
