Description: Renowned Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) inscribed and signed this pensive self-portrait photograph in 1987. With an inescapable gaze, Karsh considers the viewer, index finger raised to his lips.

Karsh is remembered as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. After surviving the Armenian genocide and emigrating to Canada, he established himself as a significant photographer in Ottawa. His iconic 1941 photograph of Winston Churchill, “The Roaring Lion,” brought Karsh international acclaim. More than twenty of his photographs appeared on the cover of Life magazine.
