Description: Ralph Bunche (1903-1971) politely declines to give a lecture for the Hadley Memorial Fund, citing his "unusually heavy" duties "when the annual session of the General Assembly is meeting." This typed letter signed is on an 11" x 8 1/2" sheet of United Nations imprinted stationery. Item #A00482.

Bunche was the 1950 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation in Israel in the late 1940s, making him the first African American and first person of color to receive the award. He was instrumental in the formation and administration of the United Nations and was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy.

Condition: Puncture marks from removed staples on top left corner, two horizontal fold lines, otherwise very good.
