Description: Marian Anderson (1897-1993) boldly signed (with a 5 1/2″ signature!) the front cover of this 8-page program for a January 30, 1957 performance at Temple Israel in Albany, New York.

Anderson was a major singer of the twentieth century with a performance repertoire that spanned genres, from opera to traditional American songs and spirituals. She played an important role in the struggle for black artists to overcome racial prejudice in the United States and was the first black person to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. She worked as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Committee and as a goodwill ambassador for the U.S. Department of State. She sang at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963 and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom that same year.
