Description: In this friendly typed letter to a fan, Wodehouse writes: “Dear Mr Johnson. Yes, my Skeewassett in ANGEL CAKE is Skowhegan. I was there in 1950 with a show I wrote starring Fay Bainter. We opened at Skowhegan at that beautiful theater (where Life With Father opened) and I had a great time. I loved Skowhegan. For the purposes of the story I had to put a hotel there. Actually there is only an inn that provides meals but not sleeping accomodation [sic]. Clients live in bungalows.” The letter is dated June 19, 1952 and Wodehouse indicates that he is writing from Remsenburg, Long Island, NY. Angel Cake was published in the United States on May 8, 1952 after first being published in the UK in April, 1952 under the name, Barmy in Wonderland. Skeewassett, Maine is a fictional town in the novel that was, as explained by Wodehouse, based on Skowhegan, Maine.
