Description: We offer an original signed wood engraving by Dorothy P. Lathrop of a Pekinese puppy. The composition is 6” x 7 1/8” printed on fine japon paper with full margins that measure 9 ½” x 10 ½”. It is signed at the lower right in graphite “Dorothy P. Lathrop.” The print is presented in its original folio from the Woodcut Society. 

In 1944 Kou Hsiung was printed in an edition of 200 for the members of the society. Opposite the window matting is an artist’s statement from Lathrop explaining her intentions and inspiration regarding the print. She writes: “I want only to catch and hold for a time some faintest hint of a beauty of construction and design beyond my power to create or imagine.” Luckily for us, Lathrop’s powers are great and the silken fur of the puppy and crisp edges of the flora behind him show this in full effect. Dorothy Pulis Lathrop (1891-1980) was born in Albany, New York. She studied at the Arts Students League and Columbia University. She illustrated more than 38 books and wrote 9 children’s books. Her work decorates the pages of many award winning children’s books including Hitty, Her First Hundred Years, by Rachel Field, The Fair Circus, by Lathrop, and Animals of the Bible, by Helen Dean Fish, for which Lathrop was awarded an inaugural Caldecott Medal in 1938. 

Condition: Fine untouched condition, there are two small areas of adhesive at the upper corners, as presented by the Woodcut Society.
