Description: This stunning watercolor was done by the sure hand of fashion/costume designer Robert Kalloch and is signed “Kalloch” at the lower left.

The name “Bordoni” is written at the top left of the work, perhaps this costume was designed for Irène Bordoni (1885-1953), the Franco-American actress.

Robert Mero Kalloch III (1893-1947) started his career with Vogue as an illustrator and designer of women’s fashions. In 1933 he was hired by Columbia Pictures to be their in-house designer. For the next eight years he designed costumes for such notables as: Mary Astor in No Time to Marry, Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday, Rita Hayworth in The Lone Wolf Spy Hunt and Who Killed Gail Preston?, and Katherine Hepburn in Holiday. By 1941 Kalloch succeeded Adrian at MGM and designed costumes for Hedy Lamarr, Judy Garland, Lane Turner, etc. During the 1930’s and 1940’s he worked on designing the costumes for more than one hundred films.
