Description: In this timely typed letter signed, Brandeis writes to the solicitor of the State Department to obtain a passport for Mr. Lewis Epstein. He states in part: “In order to centralize the administration and distribution of funds contributed by American Zionist Organization and other American bodies for use in Palestine, it will be necessary to have Mr. Lewin-Epstein go to France and England by way of some Spanish Port. After completing this work he will join the Medical Unit of the Zionist Organization at Cairo.”
Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941) was associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1916 to 1939. He is known particularly for championing freedom of speech and the right to privacy. Throughout the latter part of his life he was extremely involved with the American Zionist movement.
E.W. Lewin-Epstein was Treasurer of the Provisional Executive Committee for General Zionist Affairs based in New York City.
Letter is typed on a 10 1/2″ x 8″ sheet of onionskin paper. It is marked: “Duplicate” in Brandeis’ hand and signed boldly in black ink. Item #A01772
