Description

Description: American artist Will Hicok Low (1853-1932) penned and signed this two-page letter on April 25, 1887 from Florence. In the letter, Low discusses meeting up with his correspondent in Alexandria “where my trains will be due at 5 and yours coming from Piacenza at 5:16.” He goes on to say: “I think that you have lost your grip in preparing to stop at Caloz[?]. Our experience there was a dangerous one to repeat…damned bad dinner…”

Will Hicok Low was an Albany, NY-born artist who studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome and Carolus-Duran. After returning to New York he joined the Society of American Artists and the National Academy of Design. He is best known for his paintings of New England and his illustrations of John Keats, as well as his murals, one of which graces the walls of the New York State Education Department rotunda in Albany.
