Description: This charming 5″ x 7″ sketch is signed and dated: “Van Zandt July 7, 1876”. It is annotated at the lower edge: “Old Albany and N. Scotland Plank-road in front of the J. Walley home”. This detailed drawing has chickens and a buggy in the road, picket and rail fences, planks piled in the foreground… a wonderful view of the rural nature of what is now a thriving New Scotland Ave leading westward out of downtown Albany, NY.

Accompanying the drawing is a wire service photograph of this and a 1951 newspaper article in which this image is used. Item #FA00387

Thomas Kirby Van Zandt (1814-1886) an artist active in the Albany, NY area, is most remembered for his paintings of race horses for owners including Leland Stanford, Erastus Corning, and Eli Whitney.

Condition: Dampstained, tack holes, scattered spots… good only.
