Description: In this 2-page letter, Erastus Corning acknowledges his friend, Alex Boullions’s, letters and approves of his travel plans for his son Edwin. He is also content with Edwin’s purchase of books, “trust[ing] he will profit from them on his return.” He is pleased “to know that [Bullions has] good letters of introduction” as “they will no doubt bring [him] in contact with gentlemen that will be beneficial” to him and his son. He hopes that “[Edwin’s] future life will prove that the time he has & will have in Europe will prove of much use to him.” Signed, “Your af. friend / Erastus Corning.”
Autograph letter signed on 8 ¼’ x 5 ¼” ivory paper. Has an accompanying transmittal envelope addressed to Rev. Alex Bullions, Care Mes. Baring Brothers & Co. London and marked in manuscript: “Steamer from Boston”.

Erastus Corning (1794-1872) was an American businessman and politician. He was involved in the iron industry, banking, and railroads. He was also a mayor of Albany, NY (1934-37) who served two terms as a U.S. congressman (1857-59, 1861-63).
Rev. Alexander Bullions (1779-1857) was pastor of the Associate Congregation of Cambridge for 50 years and the author of Repentance: A Tract.
