Description: English genre painter Charles Robert Leslie (1794-1859) penned this friendly note to a friend inviting him to dinner in 1844. The letter reads: “My dear Sir/ If you have nothing better to do will you favor Mrs. Leslie & me with your company on Saturday evg[?] next the 6th at 7 O Clock or as soon after as may be convenient to you. Yours very truly C. R. Leslie.”
Leslie studied painting at the Royal Academy beginning in 1811, where he won two silver medals. He became a full Royal Academician in 1826 and was elected to be an Honorary Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1827. He is remembered for his paintings that depicted scenes from literature and for authoring Memoirs of the Life of John Constable.
