Description: This two-page part-printed document grants 1000 acres in the district of Washington in Pendleton County South Carolina to Hugh Middleton and Edward Prince. William Moultrie, as governor, has boldly signed at the lower margin flanking the ribbon that originally held the state seal. Three quarters of the wax and paper seal is included, but no longer attached and is in two pieces. A small manuscript surveyor’s map is drawn at the upper half of one of the pages.
William Moultrie (1730-1805) successfully defended Fort Sullivan in 1776, preventing the British from taking Charleston. In 1782 he was appointed Major General and later served two terms as Governor of South Carolina.
