Description: We offer an etching by the German artist Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich. ‘Die Zum Tor Herauskommende Herde’ is 7 3/8" x 10 1/4" printed on cream wove paper trimmed to within 1/8" of the platemark. Signed "Dietrich 1740" in the plate at the bottom right corner. In this charming pastoral illustration of livestock the majority of the image is made with traditional etching and the the rocky foreground is rendered with drypoint, evidenced by the velvety burr in the rocks and weeds. Item #PR00112. Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712-1774) was a German painter, etcher, copperplate engraver and arts administrator. He was known for his versatile painting style and his keen imitations of Rembrandt. In 1741 he was appointed court painter to Augustus III at Dresden. Condition: Paper is lightly toned and there is one small foxed spot in the sky on the left, otherwise very good.
