Description

Description: This 1996 reproduction of Larry Rivers’ 1964 drawing, Portrait of LeRoi Jones (Imamu Amiri Baraka), is signed by Rivers and Baraka. The drawing was a study for the poster for Jones/Baraka’s one-act plays The Toilet and The Slave.

Larry Rivers (1923-2002) was an American artist considered to be the “Godfather” of Pop Art. He was one of the first artists to merge non-objective, non-narrative art with narrative and objective abstraction.

Amiri Baraka (1934-2014) was a poet, writer, teacher, and political activist who was well known for his social critiques and often incendiary writing style. Baraka was born Everett LeRoi Jones and changed his name after converting to Islam.

The reproduction was printed in honor of Baraka’s visit to the University of Charleston in November 1996. It is editioned at the lower right: 77/99.
