Description: This striking wood engraving depicts a craggy, rocky outgrowth (most likely in New Hampshire) accented by two birds in flight. It is titled, editioned and signed in graphite at the lower margin: “Mountain Top 7/75 Herbert Waters.”
Herbert Ogden Waters (1903-1996) was born in China to missionary parents, but spent most of his artistic career living and working in New Hampshire. He was an artist/teacher in the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project (WPA) from 1936 to 1941. His works are in the collections of many prestigious art institutions, including: Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
