Description: We offer a large hand-colored lithograph by J. Gould and H.C. Richter. The composition is roughly 12” x 17” on ivory paper that measures 15” x 22”. The inscription along the lower margin reads: “J. Gould and H.C. Richter del. Et lith. Circus Cineraceus, Walter Imp.” It is engraved by John Gould and Henry Constantine Richter for the notable work The Birds of Great Britain, published between 1862 and 1873. The print retains its full margins, including the staggered sewing holes along the binding edge. Item #PR00269.

John Gould (1804 – 1881) was an English ornithologist and bird artist. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart.

Condition: The print is toned around the composition and there are three small spots of residue on verso form prior framing, overall the colors are still quite bright and the print is in good condition.
