Description

Description: Lord Lytton, Governor-General of India, looks rather dashing leaning against a marvelously carved cabinet in this original London Stereoscopic Co. cabinet card taken from life. His knobby cane rests in his hand, top hat removed and on the cabinet next to him. The printed identifying information at the bottom of the mount indicates that this image was taken during Lytton’s tenure as Governor-General (1876-1880).

Edward Robert Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton, (1831-1891), was a British statesman who served as the 6th Viceroy and Governor-General of India (1876-1880) under Queen Victoria. His tenure as Governor-General was controversial for its ruthlessness in both domestic and foreign affairs, especially for his handling of the Great Famine of 1876–1878 and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Lytton also later served as British Ambassador to France from 1887 to 1891. Additionally, Lord Lytton was a popular and critically commended poet who used the pseudonym Owen Meredith to publish his work.

The verso of the mount bears the backmark for The London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company as well as a pencil note with Lytton’s biographical information. 6 1/2″ x 4 1/4″. Item #P00316

Condition: Mount corners are bumped (one reinforcement made with tape on verso), light soil, a few stray marks in blank areas of image. Generally good condition.
