Description

Description: David Hockney has signed this page from his 1977 book (also issued as a portfolio suite of 20 etchings with aquatint) The Blue Guitar. In blue and red ink, the print shows a guitar and the words: “The Blue Guitar / Etchings By David Hockney Who Was Inspired By Wallace Stevens Who Was Inspired by Pablo Picasso”. The verso has the first three stanzas Stevens’ 1937 poem, “The Man with the Blue Guitar.”

While Hockney’s work helped popularize the idea that Stevens was directly inspired by Pablo Picasso’s 1904 painting, The Old Guitarist, Stevens maintained that no single picture created his poem. Picasso painted The Old Guitarist during his Blue Period which deeply influenced David Hockney’s visual style, color choices, and Cubist -inspired compositions in his The Blue Guitar.

David Hockney (1937-2026) was a British painter, stage designer and photographer. He was an important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s and is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. He was known for his vivid, stylized realism and championed figurative work during a period when abstract art predominated.
