Description: On May 3, 1861, soon after the outbreak of war, a schoolboy in Albany, NY, James Marsh writes to his father, John Marsh of Cooperstown, about “great excitement here about the war. Five Thousand Soldiers in the city now and Regiments are leaving for Washington and companys [sic] are coming every day.” While he exchanges and conveys “respects” to many family members, he is also indirectly appealing for money which then is reiterated in a separate paragraph by possibly a sister, “Sarah.”
Four pages handwritten on ruled 8” x 5” ivory paper. Accompanied by an envelope which has no postal usage. Item #AM00357
Condition: Mailing fold lines otherwise very good condition. Envelope is in fair condition.
