Description: Titled “Alder Trees Big Sur” (1964), this photograph has an eerie abstract quality as the white dendrite-like trees glow from the dark forested background. It is a 9 3/4″ x 7 3/4″ gelatin silver print mounted to a 16″ x 13″ board and signed in graphite lower right: “H. Gilpin”. Verso of board is stamped: “Photographs by Henry E. Gilpin 1353 Jacks Road Monterey, Calif. 93940 File No: 2-20”.

Henry E. Gilpin (1922-2011) produced more than 7,000 negatives during his long career which began in 1959 after taking a workshop with Ansel Adams. His works are in the collections of numerous prominent art institutions, including Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, California Museum of Photography, Philadelphia Museum of Art, etc.
