Description: This Ronald Reagan signed photograph also has two 2 7/8″ x 4 1/8″ pieces of paper affixed to it with a handwritten message in Nancy Reagan’s hand. (The white piece of paper is a photo copy of the verso of Nancy Reagan’s pink stationery which has unfortunately been attached signature-side down). The note, and the signed photo, are addressed to Nancy Reagan’s friend and former classmate at Smith College, Elisabeth Orr Moses, affectionately called “Eeyore” by the Reagans.
Ronald Reagan’s inscription reads: “To Eeyore With Best Regards Ronald Reagan”. Nancy Reagan’s note reads: “Dear Eeyore- So good to hear from you after all these years – Here’s the pic of R. R. and I asked the office to send some buttons & stickers for your collection. I wasn’t with Ronnie when he went to E__[?] so I didn’t have a chance to see Curt & Dan. Doesn’t this whole thing seem unbelievable? Hope to see you somewhere– love – Nancy”.
Includes a piece of cardboard (probably once the back of a frame) with additional information about the photo: “Sent to E.O.M. 1976- via Nancy Reagan when Ronnie made an unsuccessful bid for presidency. He lost out 2 Ford. 2 Factions obvious at G. O. P. convention the ladies (N. Reagan & Betty Ford) would alternate appearances at convention — Each tried to out-do the other w/fancy gowns & smiles — Each had an enthusiastic clacque [?] of cheering partisans–”
Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) served as the 33rd Governor of California (1967-1975) and later became the 40th President of the United States (1981-1989). Reagan challenged and lost to incumbent President Gerald Ford in the 1976 Republican Presidential primaries, but went on to be elected in the 1980 Presidential election and served for two terms.
Nancy Reagan (1921-2016) was First Lady of California from 1967 to 1975, and then became First Lady of the United States in 1981 when Ronald Reagan was elected President. She championed the “Just Say No” drug awareness campaign, and was often compared to former First Lady, Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis, because of her similarly glamorous presence.
