Description: In this rather cryptic letter of 7 April (likely 1913), marked “Private,” J. M. Barrie writes to O. P. Heggie about scheduling a long piece of his. In his rather difficult to decipher handwriting he writes:
“Dear Heggie,
I think it highly probable I should like you to come with a long thing of mine in the autumn if you would care to do so. I cant [sic] be certain of time and plan for a bit yet but shd [sic] be glad if you wouldn’t fix for [sic] autumn before. Lastly [?] one knows day’s [?] which settled for you as soon as I could. I’m not sure of your address.
Yours Sincerely/ J. M Barrie”
Autograph letter signed on 7” x 5 ½” ivory stationery imprinted: “3, Adelphi Terrace House, Strand W. C.” Item #A01999
Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) was a British playwright and novelist, best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan. He was made a Baronet by King George in 1913 and a member of the Order of Merit in 1922. He left all the rights to Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.
Oliver Peters Heggie (1877-1936), an Australian theater and film actor, began in amateur theater productions in Sydney and London. He gained prominence on Broadway (NYC), playing the lead in Androcles and The Lion, Old Man Minick in Minick, Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Diggory in She Stoops to Conquer and others. He moved to Hollywood in 1928 and appeared in 27 films, including: The Count of Monte Cristo, The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu, etc.
