Description

Description: This 1880’s photograph features a bustling view of Broadway in Saratoga Springs, New York. The street is peppered with spoke-wheeled carts pulled by plodding horses and dozens of well-dressed pedestrians. Several people peer out of second story windows or lounge on the sills. Awnings advertise dry goods and carpets at Smith Brothers as well as games, books, and stationery at C. P. Penfield. A penciled note on the verso reads: “East Side Broadway Saratoga Springs / Site of 1954 Fire / Fox Jeweler Now”. Indeed the 19th century facades that appear in the photograph no longer exist today.

4 3/4″ x 7 5/8″ photograph on a 5 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ mount edged in gilt. Item #P00160
