Description: This original c. 1880 photograph shows two intricate, temple-like structures built near the banks of the Ganges river, hordes of people on floating platforms and on the elevated ground around the buildings.
A matching photograph in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has a caption: “Benares, Temple of Tárhishwara or Well of Manikarankiá”, and lists that the photographer was Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) of England. Our photo has a pencil note on the verso that reads: “Bathing Photo in Ganges[?]”.
8 1/2″ x 10 3/4″ image on a plain mount that measures: 9 3/8″ x 11″. Item #P00323
Condition: Mount corners are bumped, mount slightly bowed. Overall very good condition with very good contrast and resolution.
