Description

Description: Explorer George Kennan neatly signed his name in full on a 2 ½” x 3 ⅜” card.

George Kennan (1845-1925) was an explorer, lecturer, and journalist best known for his writings about Russia. In 1865-67, he traveled with a Western Union surveying party to Kamchatka and recorded his experiences in the well-received book, Tent Life in Siberia. He also traveled in the northern Caucasus in 1870-71, becoming a noted “expert” on Russian matters. After his travels in 1885-86 to research Russian exile and prison systems and his meetings with dissidents and exiles, he became critical of Russian autocracy. His two-volume book, Syria and the Exile System, widely influenced American public opinion. He was equally critical about the Bolsheviks who took over after the overthrow of the tsars. He also worked for the Associated Press as a war correspondent traveling to many conflict areas around the world.
