Description
Description: This black and white 8″ x 10″ photograph of O’Keeffe’s painting “Green Hill” is boldly signed on verso: “Georgia O’Keeffe” under a typed note guaranteeing the authenticity of the painting. The note reads: “This is to certify that the work of art reproduced on the other side of this photograph is an original work of art by myself and is titled ‘Green Hill’, was done in 1917. It is a watercolor measuring 10-7/8 x 15-5/8inches. Furthermore, this picture has been in my personal collection from the time it was painted until just recently. January 30, 1979”. The photograph was taken by Eric Pollitzer of Hemstead, NY as indicated on verso.
Accompanied with this signed photo is a typed note to Juan Hamilton from notorious gallery owner Andrew Crispo. The note reads in part: “Enclosed please find two black and white photographs of the Georgia O’Keeffe watercolor we recently purchased from Harold Diamond. The lady we sold it to has asked if Miss O’Keeffe would be so kind as to inscribe some sort of authentication on the back of the photographs.”
Juan Hamilton (b. 1945) was O’Keeffe’s live-in assistant, companion, and caretaker toward the end of her life. He was also an artist in his own right and is known for his clay sculptures.
Andrew Crispo (1945-2024) had a meteoric art world career, laced with scandal, which ultimately led him to jail. Though Crispo was indicted on income tax evasion, he is most notably connected to the “S&M/Death Mask Murder” of a young man in 1985 (Crispo’s assistant did go to jail for that).
