Description: The only person ever to achieve the rank of Admiral in the United States Navy, George Dewey (1837-1917) penned his signature onto this 2 5/8″ x 3 1/2″ blank card.
Dewey began his naval career during the American Civil War as executive lieutenant of the USS Mississippi. He participated in the capture of New Orleans and the Siege of Port Hudson, helping the Union take control of the Mississippi River. However, Dewey is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War, a battle wherein the entire Spanish Pacific fleet was either sank or captured with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side. For his victory, Dewey was promoted to Admiral in 1903.
