Description: Irish author Iris Murdoch penned this autograph letter signed to a Mr. Hooper which reads in part: “I think the answer to your question must be Dickens. He is a vast writer, interested in everything, full of knowledge and human sympathy, very funny, very tragic, always entertaining and writing beautifully.”

Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) is best known for her novels about good and evil, sexual relationships, morality, and the power of the unconscious. Her first published novel, Under the Net (1954), was selected as one of Modern Library’s 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. She was awarded the Booker Prize for her 1978 novel The Sea, the Sea. In 1987, she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for services to literature. In 2008, The Times ranked Murdoch twelfth on a list of “The 50 Greatest British Writers Since 1945”.

Written on an 8″ x 6″ sheet of plain blue paper. Includes original transmittal envelope with a 1989 circular cancellation. Item #A01629
