Description: In this 1971 autograph letter signed, Singer states: “If you can get my novel Satan in Goray, paper back, Avon Library, I would advise you to quote the paragraph which begins with the words Rechele was terrified, chapter 11, page 141. It would be best if you could quote to the end of the chapter, about a page and a half.”

Satan in Goray was Singer’s first novel, which came out in book form in 1935. It describes Jewish life in a Polish village of Goray during the Khmeinitsky Uprising of 1648.

Isaac Bashevis Singer (1903-1991) was Polish-born, but emigrated to the U.S. in 1935. A leading figure of the Yiddush literary movement, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1978.
