Description

Description: Thornton Wilder writes to the Drama Department at the University of Southern California declining an invitation. His reason… "I am retiring from all engagements; I am going into the desert of Colorado as a sort of unembittered hermit."

As an interesting postscript he writes: "…first I must go to… the premiers of two operas for which I have written the libretti". This most likely refers to "The Alcestial" with music by Louise Talma and Hindemith’s "The Long Christmas Dinner".

Wilder (1897-1975) was an American playwright, novelist, etc. who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize three times (The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Our Town, The Skin of Our Teeth). He also won the National Book Award for The Eighth Day.
