Description: We offer a rich impression of Lankes’ woodcut “Sunday Afternoon.” It is signed and dated in the plate: “Lankes – 1936”.
This print was issued by the American Artists Group of New York which was founded in 1934. The majority of their print output was not pencil signed in an effort to provide modestly priced art during difficult economic times.
7 1/2″ x 10″ printed on an 11 1/2″ x 15 1/2″ sheet of wove paper. Item #PR00598
Julius John Lankes (1884-1960), a Buffalo, NY artist, was a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists, American Artists Professional League, Printmakers’ Society of California, National Academy of Design, etc. His extensive work as an illustrator of Robert Frost’s poetry makes him quite recognizable.
Condition: Hinging residue on verso, four tack holes in blank margin, otherwise very good.
