Description: This bold etching features a larger than life George Washington on a promontory watching Revolutionary War General Howe’s ships heading out to sea. This etching was issued in 1932 by the U.S. George Washington Bicentennial Commission.
Etching measures 13 3/4″ x 9 3/4″. Printed on a 19 1/2″ x 14 1/2″ sheet of deckle-edged wove paper watermarked with Washington’s initials and signed in graphite lower left: “Allen Lewis imp.” Item #PR00569
Arthur Allen Lewis (1873-1957), American printmaker and writer/teacher, studied with George Bridgman at the Buffalo Arts Students League and Jean-Leon Gerome at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He was the first president of the Brooklyn Society of Etchers and a member of the National Academy of Design.
